INTRODUCTION
Algeciras, strategic World Wide point, link between two continents and two seas, is the city where the famous guitar player Paco de Lucía was born. Here is where he studied and where he started his internacional career and here is where his family still lives.
Algeciras is located in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, in the County of Andalousia, in the Province of Cádiz and on the bay of Algeciras.
It is a modern coastal city, a stopping point on the journey of people from different cultures, providing a link between Africa and Europe, thanks to its major port. This town bears some of the most enduring marks of the passing of time and civilizations, which one after the other have occupied these lands, an area of exceptional historical importance thanks to its privileged location.
With 23 kilometres of coastline, Algeciras is famous for its beaches: Playa del “Rinconcillo”, tucked away in the bay, just 3 kilometres from the city centre; Playa de “San García” and Playa de “Getares”, located in an area known as the “Ensenada de Getares”, which boasts some breathtaking cliffs and marshlands and a wealth of plants and wildlife, perched on the edge of the “Estrecho de Gibraltar” Natural Park, which stretches out towards Cabo de Gracia in Tarifa, an ideal spot to catch a glimpse of whales and dolphins. From here you can see the coast of North Africa and Gibraltar.
In this area, you will also find one of the most important sections of the” Alcornocales” Natural Park (Cork trees), important from an ecological and cultural point of view.
HISTORICAL HERITAGE AND PLACES OF INTEREST
The city´s Arabic past can still be glimpsed in certain areas, such as the remains of the ”Murallas Meriníes”, the ancient defensive walls. The church “Nuestra Sra. De la Palma” was built on the site of the former mosque.
